An article in Australian Financial Review stated that Christmas parties were on a decline in recent years, but it didn’t seem that way when we had ours at Garden State Hotel in Melbourne on Thursday night. The place was filled with professionals who had ended their work day and were winding down with a couple of drinks. With an area reserved specifically for us, Airwallex had a great night filled with food, drinks and laughter. It’s only natural that after such a big year, we celebrate in a big way.

December, being the last month of the year, is often a time we look back on the year that was and all that we’ve done. When we look back on 2016, we realise just how much we’ve grown over the past 12 months. In early July we announced our funding, having raised $5 million from backers such as Gobi Partners (Hong Kong-based investment manager of Alibaba’s venture capital fund) and Gravity Ventures. Since then, we have moved to new offices on William Street, our staff has more than doubled in number spanning seven different nationalities and we have opened our China office in Shanghai. We also became the first Australian start-up to be a part of the MasterCard Start Path program. The highlight of our year was our site going live in late October; we have since gained a number of active users.

Having attended big industry events like Money2020 (Europe and USA) and the MasterCard Start Path Global Summit, we are beginning to carve out a path for ourselves in the fintech industry. 2016 has been a massive year for us, and as it comes to an end we’re thrilled by the prospect of what lies ahead.

All of us would love to wish you a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year! Here are a few pictures from our office Christmas party:
